I’ll just assume you haven’t watched anything that came out since late 2011, so I’ll name a few must-watch anime that have been popular. I don’t like spoiling stuff, so I’ll try to give you an idea about each anime’s plot without any major spoilers. The site I recommend for watching all these anime is animecenter.tv. It’s got most new anime in HD and older ones in very high quality too. Can’t go wrong there.

The first one I recommend is Guilty Crown (24-ish episodes). It started airing in 2011, but it’s one of the few anime that I still remember being pretty amazing. Can’t really summarize GC well though. You just gotta watch it. It’s an amazing anime with some pretty heavy character development. The main character gains a mysterious power and goes through a lot of drastic changes in behavior and mindset because of that.

I’m not too sure if this counts as a hype anime cause I wasn’t on tumblr yet at the time, but Tiger & Bunny (24-ish episodes) was definitely a pretty big thing. It takes place in a world where super heroes are the main characters of a television show. Although their fight against crime is real, it’s also a source of entertainment for the general public. The main character is pretty old-school in his beliefs about what a super hero should be like, so naturally, he struggles in this system. Some serious shit goes down towards the end.

The most hyped over anime last year was Sword Art Online (25-ish episodes). It takes place inside a video game and it’s basically about people struggling to stay alive. The first half of it is pretty amazing, while the second one is much weaker in comparison. Romance is a big part especially in the second half though, so if you’re into that, go ahead and watch it.

Another anime that was pretty popular last year was Kuroko no Basuke (24 episodes). It’s a sports anime about basketball (who would have thought) and although that may sound boring, KnB just does everything right. The characters are interesting and memorable and the basketball matches are engaging and veeeery epic. Awesome animation. The second season started airing recently, so I’d recommend catching up now so you can experience the hype first-hand.

One of my personal favorites is Ao no Exorcist (24 episodes). You’ve got demons, exorcists, half demon exorcists and a clown (sorta). Also, epic music, beautiful animation and lovable characters. Although the anime deviates a lot from the manga towards the end, so I’d recommend reading the manga as well.

Nurarihyon no Mago (two seasons, 50-ish episodes) is similar to Ao no Exorcist, but there are a lot of differences. The main focus here are the demons, while in AnE most of the plot revolves around the exorcists. AnE (the manga, at least) is better in my opinion, but definitely give NnM a try as well.

Zetsuen no Tempest (24 episodes) isn’t very popular but it’s an amazing anime anyway. It’s basically an anime about how the world is about to end and two teenage boys sorta wanting to stop that. The plot is a bit unpredictable and the two main characters are extremely unique (like WTF is wrong with you guys unique). Do not judge them based on your first impression of them. The side characters are also pretty entertaining.

If you’re into Arabian Nights themed stuff, I’d go for Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic (24-ish episodes). It’s unique cause there’s pretty much no other anime with this theme and Magi pulls it off pretty well. It starts out light-hearted, but the plot very quickly turns serious and very engaging.

One of the two big hype anime this year is Attack on Titan/Shingeki no Kyojin (24 episodes). If you haven’t heard of this anime, you’ve either been living under a rock, or you just haven’t been on tumblr. Pretty gruesome anime about big people eating little people and humanity’s struggle to break free from their life behind protective walls. Not recommended for the weak-hearted. And even though it’s not my #1 favorite anime of all time, it’s way up there cause the SnK anime does everything right, even till the last episode. The music, the animation, the characters, the plot, just everything. If you’re ready to have nervous breakdowns over the sheer epicness of this anime, go right ahead.

The second big hype anime this year is Free! Iwatobi Swim Club a.k.a Swimming Anime (12-ish episodes). It was initially just a very well-made PV with four hot guys swimming made by Kyo Ani to show off some animation skills, but it ended up becoming a tumblr sensation. Suddenly blogs, fan art and fanfiction were created for characters that didn’t even have names and after people even started a petition to get this PV made into an anime, Kyo Ani announced the official anime. Free! is basically hot guys swimming and sexual tension. That’s it. Be prepared to drool.

Some other great anime you may want to check out: Blood Lad, Natsume Yuujinchou, K-Project, Air Gear, Beelzebub, Tegami Bachi, Phi Brain, Tsuritama, Karneval, Fairy Tail, Fullmetal Alchemist, Durarara!! Pandora Hearts and Kure-nai.

Tell me when you’ve watched any of these and what you thought about them.
